To add to Jeremyโs answer, in some forms of cricket teams may also switch sides after a certain number of balls have been bowled. There are 20 over matches (120 balls bowled by each side) and 50 over matches (300 balls) where each team bats and bowls once.
These matches have become increasingly popular because they are a lot shorter than a full 4 or 5 day cricket match where potentially each team bats (usually for as long as it takes until 10 batters are out) and bowls twice.
And yes, an individual batter will bat until they are out.
